The Cho Family
The Cho Family
The Cho family recently immigrated to the United States with the hope of providing a better life for their children. The Cho’s have three children to care for, twins Yegeon and Yesung both 4 years old and Hawon age 7. Yegeon Cho was born with Cerebral Palsy, a medical condition usually caused by brain damage occurring at or before birth and marked by muscular impairment. Both parents are currently unemployed, but are able to provide for their children with support from family members. Yegeon’s cerebral palsy forces him to be in a wheel chair most of the time and requires ongoing medical treatment that his family cannot afford.
Thankfully, The Cho family was introduced to Children’s Health Initiative of Orange County (CHI OC) through the Buena Park Health Care Agency. When they came to CHI OC for the first time in March 2012 they were assisted by Health Care Access Coordinator, Maribel Hurtado. They were ineligible for an affordable public program, so Maribel enrolled them into CHI OC’s OC Cares Program to connect them to coverage at a local community clinic. The Cho’s explained that they were concerned for their son because he had no health insurance and was not eligible to receive benefits for any state or federal program. Maribel assured them that as OC Cares members if a program opened up that they were eligible for she would contact them as soon as possible.
When Kaiser Permanente Child Health Plan (KPCHP) announced that they were opening in June 2012, the Cho family was one of the first to be contacted from the OC Cares Program. Maribel assisted the family with applying for KPCHP for their three children the first day it was available on June 1st, 2012. The only way to apply for KPCHP is through the One-e-App online enrollment database system. As managers of the Orange County One-e-App, CHI OC has integrated technology and improved current enrollment systems used by our most vulnerable families. As a result the Cho’s application was approved and their coverage began exactly one month later on July 1st, 2012.
As a result of their son’s health care benefits through Kaiser Permanente Child Health Plan, the Cho family is now able to take their sons for preventive and follow-up check-ups with their Primary Care Physician. The Cho family is very glad to know that if Yegeon needs further treatment or emergency care that he will have coverage. Furthermore, they have peace of mind that they are able to care for him to the best of their ability.
